Leukemia Research Life to honor Dr. Taub at Evening of Hope

A Michigan organization dedicated to combating pediatric cancer will honor a Wayne State University School of Medicine faculty member for his efforts to do the same.

Leukemia Research Life Inc. will recognize the cancer-fighting research and treatment of Jeffrey Taub, M.D., at its 29th annual Evening of Hope dinner March 13.

"He's a pretty amazing person," Nichole Shotwell, executive director of LRL, said of Dr. Taub. "I have had a lot of experience with Dr. Taub's patients. His energy and dedication really know no bounds, he goes so far above and beyond. Any time you talk to anyone who has experienced pediatric cancer in their family and they've been to Children's Hospital, Dr. Taub's name comes up. He's a real inspiration."

The foundation's stated mission is to eradicate childhood cancer by funding pediatric cancer research at Children's Hospital of Michigan, in conjunction with Wayne State University and the Karmanos Cancer Institute. The organization was formed by parents of children battling cancer, and remains a volunteer-based group.

LRL has raised more than $3 million for childhood cancer research and has funded three independent cancer research projects this year.

"Dr. Taub's clinical care and research have helped, and will continue to help, countless children and families affected by childhood leukemia," said Bonita Stanon, M.D., the Schotanus Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and pediatrician-in-chief at Children's Hospital of Michigan. "Dr. Taub is a superb pediatrician, teacher, researcher and a wonderful, inspirational individual."

Dr. Taub, a professor of the School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics, serves as a pediatric oncologist at Children's Hospital of Michigan. He holds the Children's Hospital/WSU-Ring Screw Textron Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cancer Research.

The dinner honoring Dr. Taub will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Laurel Manor in Livonia. The event includes dancing and an auction, with all proceeds going to pediatric cancer research at Children's Hospital of Michigan. Ticket prices begin at $85. Call (313) 884-0931 or visit www.lrlinc.org.
