Mitchell Carey, M.D., Class of 1976

Mitchell J. Carey, M.D., (Class of 1976) has been named the 2009 Family Physician of the Year by the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Carey completed his undergraduate studies at Grand Valley State College and then received his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1976.

Upon receiving his medical degree, Dr. Carey went to the Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals for an internship and residency. 

In 1979, Dr. Carey joined the East Jordan Family Health Center in Northern Michigan and has worked there since.

Throughout his time at the center he has provided the community with family medical care, obstetric services, emergency medicine and in-patient services at the Charlevoix Area Hospital and Grandvue Medical Care Facilities.

Dr. Carey serves as director of Emergency Services for Charlevoix County, the medical officer for the City of East Jordan and as the medical examiner for Charlevoix County. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Carey will be presented with the award July 25 at the East Jordan Family Health Center by the president of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians.
