David Friedman, M.D., (Class of 1941) of Detroit, Mich., died Jan. 9, 2009. He was 93.
Raising money for medical school with a shoe repair pickup and delivery service, Dr. Friedman received his medical degree from Wayne State University.
With a fervent love for Detroit and its residents, Dr. Friedman created a family practice in 1940. In 1952, he opened Park Community Hospital to provide care for black patients during an era when blacks were turned away from other hospitals.
In 1964, he enrolled in a University of Michigan residency program specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation to help people battle paralysis and the loss of limbs.
Dr. Friedman is survived by his children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Rae Garber Friedman.
