Charles C. Herrington, M.D., (Class of 1954) died Sept. 20, 2008, at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe, Mich. He was 82.
Dr. Herrington served in the U.S. Army and, after his discharge, attended the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine. After completion of residency and trauma training at Detroit Receiving Hospital, he was the chief resident of Harper Hospital. Dr. Herrington returned to Bad Axe, and was instrumental in the formation of Huron Memorial Hospital, where he served on the board for many years. As a dedicated physician, he was committed to the improvement of the medical profession. Dr. Herrington was a member of the Michigan State Medical Society, the Detroit Academy of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also served as president of the Midwest Surgical Association. After retirement in 1982, Dr. Herrington taught in the St. Clair County Community College nursing program in Bad Axe.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter, Susan (Joseph) Schwedler, of Crystal Falls, Mich.; Catherine (Michael Taft) Herrington, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Charles (Ilene Shell) Herrington, of Boise, Idaho; the Hon. David (Shelley) Herrington, of Port Austin, Mich.; Marion (James Warchall) Herrington, of Port Austin, Mich.; Dorothy Herrington, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Margaret (Tim) Hinkle, of Melrose, Mass.; step-children, Brien (Ann) Smith, of Dallas, Texas; Maggie Smith, John Smith, Ann (Lance) Bell and Adam Smith, all of San Antonio, Texas; 14 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; sister, Mary (Nate) Herrington Whiteside of Glen Arbor, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Navy Seal Joseph Clark Schwedler.
