Graduate Programs: Enhancement Awards; SEMCME Research Workshop Series

Physiology department receives WSU enhancement award
The WSU School of Medicine Department of Physiology was one of six departments to receive a $250,000 Graduate Program Enhancement Award. The funding will allow programs to add faculty, support students and improve facilities to provide graduate students with exceptional training in top-notch programs. The deans of the university's 11 schools and colleges nominated programs for the awards, and the programs each submitted a plan to Provost Nancy Barrett for program improvement. The other programs that received awards were audiology/speech-language pathology, biomedical engineering, communication, instructional technology and psychology. Last year, the School of Medicine's Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology received an enhancement award.

Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education hosts Research Workshop Series
The Research Committee of the Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education, formerly OHEP, will conduct a workshop series to help residents learn the fundamentals of research methodology. The series will run on Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Jan. 11, in the Fischer Center Auditorium in Providence Hospital. The emphasis in each of the sessions is on the research process, including defining and assessing the problem, planning the study, implementing it and analyzing outcomes, and communicating results. The series will employ both didactic and small group discussions, which will allow residents the opportunity to interact with faculty with research expertise and who will provide limited research project guidance. Enrollment in each session is limited to assure ample opportunity for individualized assistance to each resident or fellow.

The first workshop, "Design of Research Projects," will be from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 5. Topics to be discussed include "Basics of Research Study Design," "Critical Evaluation of the Medical Literature," "Research Forum Winners: Lessons Learned," and Small Group Project Planning." Workshop II, "Hypothesis Formulation and Testing," will be Wednesday, Nov. 2., and Workshop III, "Written and Oral Presentation of Scientific Research," will be Wednesday, Jan. 11. The series will culminate with the SEMCME Research Forum and Meadow Brook Lecture in May, 2006.
