Protect PCs from recent worm outbreaks

Last week, many Windows computers at Wayne State University were been hit by two different computer worms: One worm scans for vulnerable versions of Symantec AntiVirus software, and the other worm scans for various vulnerabilities in Windows computers. The potential impact of these vulnerabilities included lost data, stolen identity and computer system crashes. What you can do to protect your Windows home computer:

1. If you are using the free Symantec AntiVirus softwarw from WSU, check that you are running the latest version and that you have the patch installed.

a. On your computer, click Start, go to Programs, then Symantec Client Security, and finally Symantec AntiVirus.

b. If your program version number is less than 10.1.0.401, you need to upgrade it.

c. See the download and installation instructions for Symantec AntiVirus

2. Check that your Windows updates are current. See the website for operating system updates.

3. Check to see that you have enabled a Windows XP firewall. See the website for details.
