Number of uninsured Americans tops 46 million

There are now 46.6 million uninsured Americans, an increase of 1.3 million between 2004 and 2005, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The number of uninsured children increased from 7.9 million to 8.3 million. In a report released last week, "Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2005," the government also reports that the median household income in the country rose slightly between 2004 and 2005, while the number of Americans at or below the national poverty rate remained unchanged at 12.6 percent.
