NIH seeks applicants for 2007 Pioneer Awards

National Institutes of Health Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., is seeking applicants for the 2007 NIH Director's Pioneer Awards. The program supports creative scientists who take highly innovative and potentially transformative approaches to major challenges in biomedical research. The awards provide funding to scientists who are unlikely to receive grants through the traditional NIH peer review process because their ideas might be "too novel, span too diverse a range of disciplines, or be at too early a stage." Each recipient will receive $2.5 million in direct costs over five years. The NIH expects to award five to 10 grants in the 2007 program. Applications will be accepted between Dec. 1 and Jan. 16.
