Main Campus: Armed robberies; Funeral for Ol' Man Winter; OneCard discounts

Two armed robberies committed on campus
Two female students were the victims of armed robberies during the week of Feb. 21; neither student was injured. The first robbery occurred at about 2:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 21, on Cass Avenue, south of Antoinette. A man showed the student a handgun before demanding her prescription glasses. He fled on foot after she gave him the glasses. The second robbery occurred at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 22, on the southbound Lodge Service Drive, south of the Ford Freeway. A man threatened to shoot the student if she did not give up her cell phone. She refused, and the man grabbed her purse instead before fleeing to a car parked on the service drive. The car was described as a tan-colored, mid-1990s Ford, possibly a Taurus; a partial license plate number of "17V--5" was reported. Anyone with information on the robberies should call WSU Police at (313) 577-2222. Members of the WSU community are reminded to call WSU Police at (313) 577-2222 anytime they see anything strange, unusual or suspicious in the campus area.

Bury winter, celebrate spring
The 22nd annual Funeral for Ol' Man Winter will be at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 6. Led by a "monster truck hearse" and a Dixieland band featuring WSU music students, a procession will begin at Einstein Bros. Bagels in North Hall and rumble through campus, taking WSU employees and students on a wacky burial march. It will end -- where it has for 22 years -- outside Circa 1890 Saloon, where owner Steve Xantheas donates his day's proceeds to the University. This year, former television personality Dwayne X. Riley will bury winter and the winner of the Wayne Idol contest will sing a song to welcome spring.
