LCME to hold public hearing on proposed accreditation standards

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education will hold a hearing for public comment on proposed changes in medical school accreditation standards. The hearing will be at 1:30 p.m., Oct. 28, during the AAMC's Annual Meeting, in Seattle. The LCME's proposed changes include the addition of three new accreditation standards related to: the learning environment for medical students; service -learning opportunities for students; and clinical and translational research in the curriculum. The LCME is also proposing substantive changes to three existing standards related to: the use of educational program objectives in course design and evaluation; outcome-based objectives and expected competencies; and criteria for the types of patients and clinical conditions encountered by students. Comments on the proposed changes may also be submitted in writing; comments are due Oct. 25. Anonymous comments will not be considered.
