Information Systems: Server shut-down

Systems to shut down during server move
The WSU School of Medicine will be moving its server equipment on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 5 a.m. to noon. During this relocation from Scott Hall to 5925 Woodward Ave., various systems will be unavailable, including email, file services, print services, web services and various database applications. Network connectivity within the medical campus, to main campus and to the Internet will not be affected at any time during this move.

WSU to deploy new spam-blocking software
Spam -- the electronic version of unsolicited junk mail -- clogs our email inboxes every day. Wayne State's Mirapoint Email System already blocks millions of spam messages each year from known spam sites. Until now, however, it has been difficult to identify the remaining spam from the valid email, so large amounts of spam still have been getting to your mailbox.

On Thursday, Feb. 24, Computing & Information Technology is installing a new product from Mirapoint called MailHurdle. This technology promises to catch up to 98% of all spam, and with it, more viruses that propagate via email.

Initially, a delay in some email delivery may be seen as MailHurdle verifies each piece of email and builds a database of valid senders. Once a sender is validated, messages will be delivered without delay. Most email delays will be 30 minutes at most, and likely few people will notice them. Overall, you should see a dramatic reduction in the amount of spam you receive. You may also notice a net increase in WSU Email performance. This is because spam and virus-infected emails get rejected by MailHurdle at an early stage, an approach that significantly reduces the overhead devoted to scanning and rerouting this unwanted mail.

To catch any remaining spam that does get through after the MailHurdle installation, you can set up junk mail folders on WSU Webmail or in the Eudora POPmail program that runs on your desktop computer.
