Congress passes NIH reauthorization

Congress has passed a revised bill to reauthorize the National Institutes of Health, clearing the legislation for the president's signature. The "National Institutes of Health Reform Act of 2006," increases the authorized funding levels for NIH to $30.3 billion in fiscal year 2007 and $32.8 billion in 2008, increases of 7 percent and 8.2 percent, respectively. The bill also authorizes "such sums as may be necessary" for 2009. The revised legislation requires the director of the NIH to establish a reserve account called the "common fund," subject to appropriations. For more information, please visit the website.
