Computing & Information Technology: Email viruses

Guard against computer viruses
An outbreak of the Mytob virus, a computer virus that sends email messages to recipients telling them their account has been suspended, occurred recently. The message may look like a computing-related email address, such as support@wayne.edu, but it is not. These messages are designed to fool you into infecting your computer by directing you to an attachment or a link to "validate" or "confirm" your information. The attached link contains the virus itself, and launching it will potentially infect your computer. Any messages of this nature should be deleted immediately. Do not attempt to open any attached files.

Official correspondence from Computing & Information Technology or Medical School Information Systems will always be signed, and you will never be asked to confirm or validate information in such a way. As with any message, if you are not expecting an attachment from a person or a specific email address, do not open the attachment and try not to open the message itself.

If you are a medical school employee and you believe your computer may be infected, please disconnect your machine from the network and call the MSIS Helpdesk at (313) 577-1527 for assistance with disinfecting the computer. Home users may call (313) 577-4778 for assistance or visit http://securityresponse.symantec.com for more information.
