Wayne State University Board of Governors elects officers

The Wayne State University Board of Governors elected officers during its Jan. 24 meeting. Eugene Driker, of Detroit, and Birmingham resident Richard Bernstein were unanimously elected by their colleagues to one-year terms as chair and vice chair respectively. Driker was recently elected to an eight-year term which runs through 2014 and Bernstein is currently serving an eight-year term which runs through 2010.

Driker, one of the founders and a senior member of the law firm Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker, P.L.L.C., has been an active volunteer in cultural and charitable activities in Detroit and in the Jewish community. A graduate of Wayne State University earning bachelor's and law degrees, he has maintained close ties to his alma mater serving as a member and vice chair of the Wayne State University Foundation Board of Directors, president of the Law Alumni Association and a member of the Law School's Committee of Visitors. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2001 by Wayne State University. Driker also currently serves on the Advisory Board of the university's Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies.

Bernstein works as a trial attorney, who represents victims of personal injury or disability discrimination. He also is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Northwestern University School of Law. Bernstein created and hosts the CBS-Detroit television segment called "Making a Difference,"which highlights exemplary community service programs. In addition, he is a contributing editorial columnist to the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press. He also serves on numerous boards for various organizations and has received several awards.

Also receiving unanimous votes to one-year terms as 2007 board officers were John L. Davis, of Detroit, and Oak Park resident Julie H. Miller. Davis, re-elected treasurer of the board, has been an administrative officer to the Board of Governors since 1993. He is vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer at Wayne State. Miller, re-elected secretary to the board, has been an administrative officer to the Board of Governors since 2001. She is secretary of the university and senior executive assistant to the president.
