President signs funding resolution to continue federal program support

Last week, President George Bush signed into law a congressional spending plan that will fund most federal government programs for the remainder of fiscal year 2007. The $463.5 billion spending package provides $28.9 billion for the National Institutes of Health, an increase of $620 million (2.2 percent) over the previous fiscal year. Veterans Affairs research programs will receive $413.7 million, an increase of $1.7 million (0.4 percent) over last year. The measure also provides $185 million for the Title VII health professions programs, an increase of $40 million (27.6 percent) over last year; the majority of this funding will go toward restoring geriatrics training programs.
