Daylight Savings Time measures announced

Did you know we spring forward early this year? As a result of the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005 passed by Congress, Daylight Saving Time in the United States and Canada will spring forward early. The revised DST schedule will start on March 11 and end Nov. 4.  The School of Medicine will have applied the required DST Updates to all desktops and laptops that are connected to the network and configured to log into the MED domain by March 11.

PC Users:  Desktops, laptops that are configured to log into the MED domain will receive the update which will resolve most calendaring issues (example: re-occurring appointments in Microsoft Outlook).  If you are involved in meetings with external parties, the SoM helpdesk cannot confirm if those external parties are DST patched or un-patched, therefore calendaring issues could occur.

Macintosh users: DST rule changes for the United States and most of Canada are already available in Mac OS X 10.4.5 or later.  However, some additional regions that recently adopted time zone and DST changes are available in the February Daylight Saving Time Update.

Apple is providing software updates for Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4 and later based on worldwide time zone information available as of Jan. 8. To make sure that your clock maintains the proper time, install the updates that are shown for your computer in Software Update.  For information how to update Mac OS X Software, please visit http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106704.

PDA users:  If you have a Windows Mobile® Smartphone or Pocket PC device running version 5 or less, you will need to download a separate DST update manually. For information about updating Windows Mobile, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/daylightsaving/. Once the DST update has been installed on a Windows Mobile Smartphone or Pocket PC, you must manually toggle the time zone on the device. (This only needs to be done once.

If you have a PDA running the Palm OS, you will need to download a separate DST update manually. The update can be obtained from http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/dst_palmos.html.

Please Note:

  • Appointments you have sent or received during the revised DST period may not have adjusted on your calendar and will appear one hour off.
  • The DST updates may prompt conference room conflicts which should not be manually adjusted.
  • Do not make any manual time or date changes for DST on your calendar or any other applications.
  • Mobile device calendars may be out of sync with updated PC calendars, unless you download an update.

Solution Planning - Calendaring Recommendations:

  • Schedule appointments as usual. Include the date, time and local time zone in the subject line of all meeting requests scheduled between March 12 and April 1. For example: March 15 - 2:00 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time.
  • Confirm meeting times with non-Microsoft participants as they may or may not have updated systems.
  • Do not make any manual time or date changes for DST on your calendar or any other applications. If you made manual adjustments to your calendar appointments change them back.
  • Accept meeting requests you receive, generated as a result of calendars applying the DST updates.
  • If you have a Mobile Device make sure to download and install the update.
