AAMC supports revision to federal financial aid application

The AAMC and 170 other organizations have urged members of Congress to pass legislation that would revise a confusing question related to drug conviction on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. In a letter, the organizations involved in the Coalition for Higher Education Act Reform requested that Congress pass the soon-to-be-introduced "Removing Impediments to Students' Education Act," sponsored by Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass). The bill would reinstate aid to aspiring students by removing a question about prior criminal drug convictions from the federal financial aid application. Coalition members believe the question is irrelevant to determining eligibility for financial aid and believe the question adds "complexity to the form and can deter some students from applying for financial aid."
