Hospital groups urge Congress to prevent proposed Medicaid cuts

Last week, the AAMC joined other members of the hospital community in urging Congress to prevent implementation of a Medicaid regulation that would limit the mechanisms states may use to finance their Medicaid programs. In a letter, the hospital groups warned that the proposed regulation "singles out safety-net hospitals for drastic reductions in reimbursement, thus jeopardizing care for millions of needy Americans with no other place to turn." The letter also expresses strong opposition to President Bush's federal budget proposal to prohibit Medicaid as a source of graduate medical education funding. The groups believe that Medicaid "has an important responsibility to support care for patients in the safety-net institutions that participate in graduate medical education."
