AAMC, health groups request funding for public health programs

The AAMC joined more than 400 health organizations in a letter urging Congress to increase federal funding for public health programs by an additional $4 billion (7.8 percent) above the fiscal year 2007 level. The groups believe the additional money will restore funding cuts that were enacted in the 2006 budget and will "reverse the erosion of support" for the country's public health programs. Federal public health funding supports agencies such as: the National Institutes of Health; the Health Resources and Services Administration (which administers health professions grants and the National Health Service Corps); the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and the Food and Drug Administration.
