Teaching hospitals, residents win court ruling on taxes

Mount Sinai Medical Center of Florida won an important victory recently when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit ruled against a lower court judge's 2005 decision that medical residents did not qualify for a student exemption from Social Security payroll taxes. The case will return to the lower court, where Mount Sinai will attempt to prove that its residents in fact qualified for the exemption from 1996 to 1999, the years in question in this case.
