Medicare Part D yields mixed bag on coverage, out-of-pocket costs

A survey of 16,000 senior citizens conducted by Tufts-New England Medical Center, Kaiser Family Foundation, and the Commonwealth Fund revealed that more people have prescription drug coverage due to Medicare Part D. However, that coverage lags behind plans provided by employers or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In 2006, 8 percent of seniors lacked drug coverage, compared to about 33 percent in 2005, prior to Part D implementation. However, 8 percent of seniors in a Medicare Part D plan spent at least $300 per month on medications, compared with 5 percent of those with employer or VA coverage.
