JAMA paper examines academic medicine, industry relationships

Almost two-thirds of medical school department chairs report having some form of personal relationship with commercial industry, according to the results of a study released last week in the Journal of the American MedicalAssociation. The study examined the nature, extent, and consequences of the relationships between academic institutions and industry. The authors conclude, "Overall, institutional academic-industry relationships are highly prevalent and underscore the need for their active disclosure and management." Susan Ehringhaus, J.D., associate general counsel for regulatory affairs in the AAMC Division of Biomedical and Health Sciences Research, co-authored the paper.
