House clears stem cell research bill

On June 7, the House passed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007. The bill, which would allow federal funding for research on new human embryonic stem cell lines, now goes to the president's desk. Congress passed a similar measure in 2001, but President George Bush vetoed the measure, and reportedly plans to do the same with this legislation. The House is unlikely to garner the two-thirds majority necessary to override the president's veto.
