AAMC expresses support for CHAMP Act

The AAMC has sent a letter of support for the Children's Health and Medicare Protection Act currently under consideration in the House of Representatives. The bill contains several provisions on issues important to the AAMC, including reauthorizing the State Children's Health Insurance Program, providing temporary relief from Medicare physician payment cuts, limiting physician referral to specialty hospitals and providing regulatory relief from the 75 percent rehabilitation facility rule. The bill also rejects the Bush administration's proposal to eliminate teaching hospitals' Medicare indirect medical education payments associated with Medicare Advantage enrollees. The AAMC letter expresses concern with the provision that reduces the hospital update in fiscal year 2008 and urges reconsideration of the provision.
