Public Affairs: WSU School of Medicine in the news

Dr. Seetha Shankaran, a WSU professor of pediatrics, was quoted in the Los Angeles Times in a story about an alternative way of cooling oxygen-deprived newborns. The National Institutes of Health study, which is being conducted at 17 medical centers in the United States, involves placing infants in a specially designed blanket that chills their body temperature to 92 degrees Fahrenheit for 72 hours. "We now know that cooling is protective, which is very exciting," Dr. Shankaran said. "Now we're trying to find the best method."

Dr. Mark Juzych, WSU associate professor of ophthalmology, was quoted in a Detroit News story about efforts to legalize medical marijuana in Michigan. Dr. Juzych, who has prescribed the drug for a patient with glaucoma, said there are better treatment methods available. "I'm not convinced that it's doing the trick," he said. "There's no real scientific evidence that it really does anything."

Dr. Charles Whitten, WSU associate dean emeritus, was profiled in a Detroit Free Press story about an experimental program designed to involve parents in helping their kids learn to read.
