Wigs 4 Kids fundraiser
Wigs 4 Kids, a non-profit organization that provides wigs for children and teens who have experienced hair loss from medical conditions or treatments, is hosting a fundraiser Friday, Oct. 8, at the Fern Hill Country Club. The event, "Children, Charity and Camaraderie," will include dinner, entertainment, a silent auction and entry into a $1,000 reverse raffle. Tickets are $50 in advance or $60 at the door. For more information, call (586) 772-6656 or visit wigs4kids.org.

NAAMA's Walk for Women's Cancer
The National Arab-American Medical Association will sponsor a Walk for Women's Cancer on Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Detroit Zoo. Proceeds from the event will benefit women's health education and awareness programs at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Cancer causes one-quarter of the nation's deaths each year; of these cases, nearly one-third are women. For more information on how you can contribute to this cause or to sign up for the walk, please visit www.cancerwalk.org.

Hospital needs your used magazines
Harper University Hospital needs relatively current magazine donations for patients and visitors. When finished with a magazine, bring it to the Harper Library or Harper Volunteer Office at 5 Webber Core, West, Suite 5351. A wide variety of publications, such as Women's Day, Essence, Reader's Digest, Ebony, Sports Illustrated, Jet, Good Housekeeping, Time and Newsweek, are needed. For more information, contact Twona Smith at (313) 745-2383 tsmith1@dmc.org.

"Covering Kids & Families" campaign launched
Last week, the annual "Covering Kids & Families Back-to-School Campaign" was launched to promote awareness of federal and state health-insurance options. The campaign encourages families with children to call 1-877-KIDS-NOW to find out if they are eligible for free or low-cost health insurance. More than 8.5 million children in America do not have health-care coverage. Most of these children are eligible for Medicaid or state children's health insurance programs, but their parents may not realize they qualify.
