Dr. Abrams honored at professional meeting

Gary W. Abrams, M.D., the David Barsky Chair of Ophthalmology at Wayne State University and director of the Kresge Eye Institute, received the Paul Kayser Award for Retina Research from the Schepens International Society on June 17, at its biennial meeting in Vancouver, B.C. The Schepens International Society is named after Dr. Charles Schepens, of Boston, one of the pioneers of retinal surgery. Dr. Schepens invented the binocular indirect ophthalmoscope and was the first surgeon in the United States to employ scleral buckling techniques in repair of retinal detachment. The Award is provided by the Retina Research Foundation. Dr. Abrams was recognized for his work in surgery for retinal detachment associated with proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Dr. Abrams was the co-recipient of the award with Dr. Judah Folkman, of Boston, the father of angiogenesis research in medicine. Dr. Folkman's work has led to development of anti-angiogenic compounds now used to treat cancer and choroidal neovascularization due to age-related macular degeneration. In recognition of Dr. Abrams' work, Kresge Eye Institute received an award of $25,000 to support future research.
