Neurology faculty present at Toronto meeting

Several members of the WSU Department of Neurology presented studies at the ninth annual meeting of the Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis, in Toronto. Presentations included:

  • "Immune Therapy of Relapsing EAE by Neutralization of CD4+ T-cell Chemoattractant Cytokine IL-16," by Dusanka Skundric, M.D, Ph.D., WSU assistant professor of neurology. Co-authors include R. Dia, V. Zakarian, R. Skoff, D. Bessert, W. Cruikshank and Zkurjakovic.
  • "White Matter Atrophy Correlates with Clinical Disability in patients with Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease," by John Kamholz, M.D., Ph.D., WSU professor of neurology and member of the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics. Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease is an inherited disease of the myelin-forming cells of the brain. Co-authors included J. Laukka and J. Garbern.
  • "Aspartoacylase is Expressed Predominantly in oligodendrocytes and is Decreased in MS Plaques," by James Garbern, M.D., Ph.D., WSU associate professor of neurology and member of the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics. Aspartoacylase is an important enzyme in the synthesis of N-actylaspartate, a widely used marker for axonal function in MR spectroscopy of patients with MS. Co-authors included D. Hrsitova and J. Kamholz.
