Dr. Zalenski reports awards, adventures

For Robert Zalenski, M.D., director of clinical research for the WSU Department of Emergency Medicine, the holiday season was especially busy. Dr. Zalenski traveled to China as part of a sabbatical and wound up providing emergency care to two airline passengers. On the first leg of his journey, a flight from Detroit to Tokyo, Dr. Zalenski treated a woman for an apparent bout of kidney stones; on the connecting flight from Japan to Shanghai, Dr. Zalenski resuscitated a man who had collapsed from an apparent drug overdose. The rest of the trip proceeded with relative good luck, as Dr. Zalenski met many colleagues who agreed to work with him to potentially establish an exchange program for WSU students in the future. In addition to his work in China, Dr. Zalenski also recently learned that he has received a $10,000 grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation to conduct a feasibility study on whether a large-scale trial could be developed to determine whether witnessing cardiopulmonary resuscitation attempts in the emergency room has discernable effects on family members whose loved ones die following such efforts.
