Renu A. Kowluru, Ph.D., WSU associate professor of ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute, recently received a research award from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation entitled, Role of Inflammation in the Progression of Diabetic Retinopathy. The total support will be $495,000 for three years. Dr. Kowluru and her team will determine the role of cytokines in the progression of diabetic retinopathy after hyperglycemia is terminated and investigate the effect of inhibition of cytokine function on the resistance of retinopathy to reverse.

Dr. Kowluru was also selected to serve as a regular member of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Medical Science Research Review Committee-Complications.
