The Karmanos Cancer Institute honored Drs. Bonnie Sloane, WSU chair of pharmacology, and David Bouwman, WSU professor of surgery, at its 10th-annual "Heroes of Breast Cancer" awards. Dr. Sloane was recognized for Scientific Distinction, while Dr. Bouwman received the "Compassionate Caregiver Award." The awards were part of the institute's efforts to mark National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is October. Ann Delisi, producer and host of WJR's "Inside the Music," presented the awards at the "Fighting Breast Cancer with a Passion for Fashion" Dinner/Fashion Show at Penna's of Sterling in Sterling Heights, MI. The benefit, sponsored by the Team Angels Foundation, raised funds to support the breast cancer programs of KCI. Lila Lazarus of WDIV Local 4 hosted the fashion show.
