Edwin M. Monsell, MD, PhD, WSU professor of otolaryngology, recently became one of the first otolaryngologists to be certified in the subspecialty of neurotology by the American Board of Otolaryngology. The subspecialty certification in neurotology, which is voluntary and new this year, is the first and only subspecialty certification to be offered by the board, a member of the American Board of Medical Specialists. The certiciation is for complex medical and surgical cases involving the inner ear, such as cochlear implantation, acoustic neuroma and other forms of intracranial and extracranial surgery of the lateral skull base performed in collaboration with neurosurgeons. Candidates are required to submit a list of their cases and qualifications and pass a rigorous exam.
