Event, part of Detroit Science Center exhibit, coincides with U.S. Surgeon General's Family History Initiative
You and your dad: People say you look alike, sound alike, act alike. But do you live alike? Will the health problems your father faces someday be yours as well?
If it's all in the family, it could be all in your genes.
The Wayne State University Center for Molecular Medicine & Genetics will host a Family History Awareness Day from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 6 , as part of the Detroit Science Center's exhibit, "The Genome: How Life Works." The event falls on the eve of a U.S. Surgeon General's initiative to prevent disease through family history awareness, which kicks off Monday, Nov. 8.
On Saturday, Wayne State University genetic counselors and geneticists will be on hand at the science center to help visitors young and old learn about genetics, family history and the importance of family history in identifying risks for common diseases. The day will also feature lessons on how to draw a family pedigree, which can help family members make important decisions about screenings and other preventive measures.
This event is free with admission to the Detroit Science Center, which is at 5020 John R, north of Warren Avenue. Admission to the Detroit Science Center is $7 for adults and $6 for seniors and children ages 2 through 12. For more information on attending, please call (313) 577-8400.
