Wayne State University is celebrating Women’s History Month throughout March with an official proclamation, along with a series of campus events that highlight the extraordinary achievements and enduring contributions of women throughout history.
In 1987, Congress officially designated March as Women’s History Month. In Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also issued a proclamation on March 1, 2025, declaring Women’s History Month in the state.
This month-long observance recognizes and honors the impactful roles women have played in shaping our society. The theme for Women’s History Month 2025 is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”
“Women’s History Month inspires us to reflect on the resilience, achievements and leadership of women across all fields,” said Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy, president of Wayne State University. “With its focus on education and inspiration, this Women’s History Month we celebrate Wayne State’s female students, faculty, staff and alumni who so profoundly contribute to our community.”
Wayne State offers professional development, mentorship and advocacy in support of women's academic and career success through programs including Wayne Women LEAD, the Commission on the Status of Women and the Gender Equity Advances Retention in STEM (WSU GEARS) program.
Dawn Pauli, director of student engagement and special projects and clinical placement liaison in the College of Nursing, and a representative for Wayne Women LEAD, said, “Through Wayne Women LEAD, we’re helping women build their own pathways to success. By nurturing skills and fostering connections, we’re cultivating a vibrant community where women can shine and lead with confidence.”
Beyond these initiatives, the university actively encourages women to engage in a variety of student organizations that promote mentorship and collaboration between students and faculty.
“Being a part of Wayne Women in Business has allowed me to connect with inspiring leaders and peers,” said Sophie Meyer, a sophomore and co-professional chair of Wayne Women in Business. “It’s about building a supportive community where we can share experiences, learn from each other and empower one another to reach our full potential.”
Throughout Women’s History Month, a number of events are scheduled to provide participants opportunities for education, connection and celebration.
