Wayne State and Share Detroit partner to expand community volunteer, engagement opportunities

The Wayne State University Dean of Students Office has partnered with Share Detroit, a community engagement conduit offering simple ways for neighbors, nonprofits and businesses to come together and strengthen the community. Share Detroit seeks to connect Detroiters with local nonprofit organizations, volunteer opportunities and ways to provide financial support.

Volunteer opportunities curated by Share Detroit appear on Wayne State’s new Volunteer Hub, which provides students, faculty and staff a one-stop shop to explore both ongoing and one-time engagement and service opportunities. Share Detroit can help both individuals and groups identify volunteer opportunities to fit their interests and availability at sites like Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Ronald McDonald House, Detroit Hives, the Michigan Animal Adoption Network, Kids Kicking Cancer and more. All volunteer work completed through the Volunteer Hub, including those from Share Detroit, can be logged on a student’s involvement record.

Student organizations, departments and other groups can find opportunities together using the new group volunteer form. A site is also available to  connect individuals with volunteer opportunities.

“We’ve had more students than ever coming to the Dean of Students Office seeking these kinds of opportunities,” said Heather Marks, associate director of student life marketing. “We’re excited to have a new way of directly connecting students to the Detroit community.”

The partnership came about as the newly formed Share Detroit continued to expand its efforts to reconnect nonprofits with volunteers following a halt of many local volunteer programs during the pandemic.

"Wayne State's goals align closely with our own commitment to creating meaningful community impact and connectivity," said Janette Phillips, executive director of Share Detroit. "We're so excited and proud to be partnering with the Wayne State University community who are and will become leaders working to make a difference in Detroit."

In addition to volunteer opportunities, Share Detroit will participate in Giving Tuesday on Tuesday, Nov. 30 through the end of the year and invites the Warrior community to consider donating time or money to support hundreds of local nonprofits.
