DETROIT [May 19, 2020] — Jacqueline Wilson, first lady of Wayne State University and founding director of the HIGH Program (Helping Students Go Higher), delivered grab-and-go bags to Detroit-area shelter Mariners Inn to help offset the strain that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on Detroiters in need.

The bags — which include Bombas socks and a variety of non-perishable food items — were distributed by several staff members of the Wayne State HIGH Program at Mariners Inn, located at 445 Ledyard Street in Midtown Detroit.

Mariners Inn provides 24-hour residential substance abuse treatment for adult homeless men in Southeastern Michigan. Contact Mariners Inn at 313-962-9446 or visit marinersinn.org.

The HIGH Program provides critical funds to Wayne State University students who are struggling with basic needs like tuition, books, housing and food. A few hundred dollars at the right time can save a student from dropping out of school or being homeless. Students should not have to decide between basic life needs and finishing their education. The HIGH Program has connected hundreds of students with these basic needs and provided a light at the end of the tunnel for what amounts to the most difficult period of their young lives.
