WSUPD Officer incident

At 11:24 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, a Wayne State University police officer was involved in a fatal shooting at Third Street, just north of Peterboro. 

While on routine patrol in the area, the officer responded to reports of a man firing a gun while riding a bicycle near the Detroit Rescue Mission, located between Peterboro and Brainard on Third Street. Upon the officer’s arrival, the man fired several shots at the officer, who returned fire. The man is deceased; there were no other injuries. Following standard procedure, a full investigation has begun and the officer involved will be on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Wayne State University Police Department takes a community-focused approach to policing and routinely patrols the Wayne State campus and its surrounding areas. Each WSUPD officer is also a commissioned Detroit police officer, and is committed to the safety and security of WSU’s Midtown campus and surrounding neighborhoods, where many students, faculty and staff live.

A full investigation has begun, and the officer involved will be off duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
