Wayne State University Veterans Upward Bound awarded $2.1 million grant

The Wayne State University Office of Federal TRIO was recently awarded a five-year, $2,113,975 grant for the Veterans Upward Bound Program.

The program is designed to increase the rates at which motivated low-income and first-generation veterans improve standardized test scores, enroll in college-level courses and earn baccalaureate degrees at institutions of higher education. The program provides academic instruction and “warrior-to-student” transition services to veterans residing in the city of Detroit and in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties.

Veterans Upward Bound serves motivated low-income and first-generation veterans without a four-year college degree who have served in the Gulf War or the Iraq or Afghanistan conflicts. Eligible veterans include:

• Individuals who have served on active duty as a member of the U.S. Armed Services for a period of more than 180 active service days and have been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable
• Individuals who have served on active duty as a member in the U.S. Armed Forces and have been released due to a service-connected disability
• Individuals who were a member of a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces and were called to active duty for a period of more than 30 days
• Individuals who were a member of a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces who served on active duty in support of a contingency operation on or after Sept. 11, 2001

Veterans Upward Bound provides noncredit academic instruction in traditional classroom settings on campus, online and in distance-learning formats. Veterans learn in an outcome-based, pre-college curriculum with a mastery learning approach. The core curriculum includes English composition and literature, mathematics through pre-calculus, physical science, Spanish language, college entrance test preparation, computer technology, financial literacy, and study skills. Career planning, college student success and veterans educational benefit workshops are also provided.
