Wayne State University’s Department of Communication announces that an exciting new partnership has enabled Youth Neighborhood News (YNN): The Logan Network to be based at the university’s midtown Detroit campus.
YNN Logan Network is a broadcast journalism education program for high-school age students, founded by the Detroit Regional News Hub and sponsored by Strategic Staffing Solutions, Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Cooper-Standard Automotive.
Students meet two days a week and learn journalism skills such as writing, interviewing, editing and storytelling, and they report stories from throughout metro Detroit. YNN focuses on broadcast journalism and includes blogging from YNN reporters. Its news reports typically are 3 to 5 minute packages, with an emphasis on positive stories told from a younger perspective. The YNN team has covered events and programs such as the mayor of Detroit’s state of the city address, the Ann Arbor Art Fair, the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference and Wayne State’s Farmers Market. “We are very pleased YNN Logan Network is now based at Wayne State University,” said Marge Sorge, Detroit Regional News Hub executive director. “When we founded the program, our goal was to help these young people become objective journalists, good writers and strategic thinkers. The partnership with Wayne State and its excellent Department of Communication will help take that objective to its highest level.”
“It’s wonderful that a partnership such as this enables Wayne State University to welcome YNN Logan Network’s students to our collegiate learning environment,” said Loraleigh Keashly, associate professor and interim chairperson for Wayne State’s Department of Communication. “Interaction with our strong journalism, broadcast journalism and media arts programs will enhance the students’ experience at YNN and inform their selection of college major and career.”
High school students are invited to audition for the program 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, in room 420 of Manoogian Hall, 906 W. Warren. “As students graduate from high school and move on to college, we hold auditions so we can maintain a team of about 15 YNN reporters,” said Vanessa Denha Garmo, YNN Logan Network producer. “We look for students primarily interested in writing, reporting and editing.”
