Wayne State and Henry Ford establish health science program partnership

Wayne State University (WSU) and Henry Ford Hospital (HFH) have entered into a partnership to establish a joint training program leading to a Master of Science in Radiologist Assistant. The program enables experienced radiographers with baccalaureate degrees to further their education and increase professional opportunities.

The WSU Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (EACPHS) is now accepting applications for the Radiologist Assistant program, which will begin in May 2008.

“Our college has proven expertise in the training of graduate students. Many of our graduates are in the employ of Henry Ford Hospital, and the geographic location and shared community interests make Wayne State and Henry Ford natural partners for this endeavor," said Beverly J. Schmoll, EACPHS dean.

“Evolving technological advancements and increases in radiologic services have made it increasingly difficult for current radiologists to meet service demands,” said Kathy Kath, director for the Radiologist Assistant program in the college’s Department of Health Care Sciences. “A viable cost effective alternative is the radiologist assistant, an attractive alternative and effectual complement to understaffed imaging departments.”

The Radiologist Assistant program offers new opportunities for radiographers who wish to increase their patient interaction, have more demanding responsibilities and experience professional fulfillment and personal growth. The program builds upon previous education and experience without abandoning previously acquired skills and knowledge.

Students admitted to the HFH/WSU program leading to a Master of Science degree will need to
  • Have graduated from an accredited Diagnostic Radiography program.
  • Earned a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Have been employed as a radiographer for a minimum of three years.
  • Provide proof of American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) registration and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
