The Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital Internal Medicine residency program was well represented at the two Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education spring 2023 research events.

Fourteen resident teams had poster or slide presentation projects accepted for the Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and High Value Care Summit held May 12 at the Michigan State University Management Education Center in Troy. Three received awards.

In the poster category, “Addressing Health Disparities in Inpatient Diabetes to Improve Patient Outcomes,” presented by Anoopa Mathew (co-authors Hanan Hannoodee, Tamara Altaweel, David Samrah, Zarghoona Wajid, Sarwan Kumar and faculty advisor Vesna Tegeltija) won first place.

“Standardization of Inpatient Hypertension Management,” presented by Dhairya Salvi (co-authors Trishya Reddy, Aldin Jerome, Abdullah Yesilyprak and faculty advisor Vesna Tegeltija) won third place.

Mousa Hammoud presents “Optimizing the Use of CT Angiograms in Diagnosing Pulmonary Embolism.”

In the slide presentation category, “Optimizing the Use of CT Angiograms in Diagnosing Pulmonary Embolism,” presented by Mousa Hammoud (co-authors Aldin Jerome, Vrushank Patel, Pranav Chalasani, Joseph Vercellone, and faculty advisor Vesna Tegeltija) won second place.

After the judging was completed, SEMCME Executive Director Michel Geheb hosted a session on successful collaborative quality improvement initiatives in the region. Panelists included Internal Medicine Associate Program Director Vesna Tegeltija (herself a graduate of the IM Residency program), who discussed the highly productive QI program, which has resulted in dozens of posters featured at SEMCME events.

One Internal Medicine resident team participated in the SEMCME Research Forum held May 24 in Lovett Hall at The Henry Ford in Dearborn. Kevser Akyuz presented the poster “Salvage Therapy for Atrial Fibrillation with Rapid Ventricular Rate” (co-authors Abdullah Yesilyprak, Jahanavi Ramakrishna, Hussein Tahanulqiwa, Tripti Nagar, Nishit Choksi and faculty advisor Vesna Tegeltija).
