Edward S. Thomas Section of Community and Public Health Golf Outing seeks sponsors

The seventh annual Edward S. Thomas Section of Community and Public Health Golf Outing, scheduled for June 13 at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield, is seeking sponsors and golfers.

The outing begins with a noon lunch, followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start, capped by a 5 p.m. cocktail hour and strolling dinner.

Medical Center Emergency Services and the Wayne State University School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine, sponsors and co-hosts of the event, are seeking sponsors to support the outing. The outing celebrates the legacy of Edward S. Thomas, who was a friend, mentor, colleague and inspiration to the many who worked with him. Thomas was a member of the School of Medicine's Board of Visitors and served as president of Detroit Receiving Hospital following years of dedication and service at the Detroit Medical Center. He was a leader in the Detroit metropolitan community, involved in a leadership capacity with many nonprofit organizations, including Children’s Home of Detroit, the Michigan Hospital Association and multiple gubernatorial task forces.

Proceeds benefit the Edward S. Thomas Section of Community and Public Health in Emergency Medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. The section, in 2021:

* Supported more than 18,000 COVID-19 tests with the Wayne Health Mobile Unit

* Under the leadership of Phillip Levy, M.D., M.P.H., professor of Emergency Medicine and assistant vice president of Translational Science and Clinical Research Innovation for Wayne State University, received two funding awards from the American Heart Association and National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities that address hypertension in the community with a focus on growing the community health workforce

* Started a Mobile Lead Testing Program in partnership with the Wayne Health Mobile Unit, which has been deployed to Benton Harbor, Mich., in response to the water crisis there

* Launched a Sterile Syringe Program in partnership with the Wayne Health Mobile Unit and Team Wellness Center, providing clean harm reduction supplies, rapid HIV and Hepatitis C testing, and linkage to substance use treatment

* Provided more than 50 blood pressure cuffs to community members to assist with hypertension management

* Hosted focus groups with community members and community health workers as part of Bring It Down, a chronic disease management initiative, to understand what resources are needed to help address social determinants of health.
