WSU earns ACGME accreditation with commendation

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has again accredited the Wayne State University School of Medicine as the sponsoring institution for medical residency programs overseen by the school.

The ACGME’s Institutional Review Committee said the School of Medicine demonstrated substantial compliance with the ACGME's institutional requirements, and approved the annual review with commendation.

“The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s status as an accredited sponsoring institution with commendation from the ACGME demonstrates the school’s strong and unfaltering dedication to our Graduate Medical Education mission, despite the challenges presented during these difficult times,” said Anne Messman, M.D., FACEP, associate dean of Graduate Medical Education for the School of Medicine. She likened the accreditation with commendation to an A+ rating.

Under Dr. Messman, the Office of Graduate Medical Education provides academic oversight for WSU-administered and affiliated residencies.

The review, conducted annually, accredits the sponsoring institution of residencies. Each individual residency undergoes a separate review and accreditation process.

In April 2020, all eight WSU-sponsored residency programs – Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Otolaryngology, Preventive Medicine, Transitional Year, and Urology – received continued accreditation from the ACGME.

WSU's Office of Graduate Medical Education was established in 2007, the same year WSU was named a sponsoring institution for residencies and fellowships. Since 2012, all subsequent reviews by the ACGME's Institutional Review Committee have led to continuedaccreditation status.

The ACGME is a private, 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization that sets standards for U.S. residency and fellowship programs and the institutions that sponsor them. Accreditation is achieved through a voluntary process of evaluation and review based on published accreditation standards. ACGME accreditation provides assurance that a sponsoring institution and residency programs meet the quality standards of the medical specialty or subspecialty for which it prepares physicians.
