Wayne State welcomes 46 new physicians to residency programs

The Office of Graduate Medical Education at the Wayne State School of Medicine held its New Resident Orientation on June 30, officially welcoming its incoming cohort of 46 physicians who began their residencies this month. The orientation was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and began with a welcome message by WSU School of Medicine Dean Mark E. Schweitzer, M.D.

Then, 2020-21 Resident Council President Ben Maynard, M.D., a third-year Family Medicine resident, offered a brief overview of council activities and goals for the upcoming year before GME Senior Associate Dean and Professor and Chair of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences Tsveti Markova, M.D., along with GME staff, conducted a session on the “GME World” and the basics of WSU employment. Orientation included brief introductions to key topics in Graduate Medical Education: professionalism, resident wellness, health disparities and cultural competency, reporting medical errors and communication skills. GME used the breakout room feature of Zoom to provide residents with an opportunity to discuss individual topics among themselves and with GME staff.

The annual Resource and Knowledge Bazaar was also held virtually, with representatives from the Office of Student Financial Aid, Medical School Alumni Association, WSU Wellness Warriors, the Michigan State Medical Society and the Shiffman Medical Library.

The incoming residency ranks include two inaugural residents to WSU’s new MIDOCS-funded Preventive Medicine Program, directed by Assistant Professor of Family Medicine James Blessman, M.D. Interns Abdullah Hafid, M.D., and Beza Sahlie, M.D., will train for leadership roles in academic or clinical preventive medicine, health care management or clinical epidemiology. As they complete their residencies, they will also enroll in the M.P.H. program, tuition-free, offered by the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences.
