Dr. Peduzzi Nelson presents spinal cord injury repair study in Greece

Wayne State University School of Medicine Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences Jean Peduzzi Nelson, Ph.D., was an invited speaker for the 32nd annual Congress of the Hellenic Neurosurgical Society and Joint Meeting with the Society of British Neurological Surgeons and the Cyprus Neurosurgical Society in Chania, Greece, May 24-26.

Dr. Peduzzi Nelson presented "Potential of an Artificial Spinal Cord Containing Autologous Olfactory Stem Cells in the Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury."

The presentation described her patent pending work with Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering Harini Sundararaghavan, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery Assad Mazhari, M.D., in which some rats grafted with the artificial spinal cord regained fore limb and hind limb coordination after removal of a thoracic segment of spinal cord.

Dr. Peduzzi Nelson is research coordinator for an about to be completed clinical trial on the effects of exercise or exercise and environmental enrichment on cognition and balance in people with traumatic brain injury. She is a member of the Department of Neurosurgery and faculty director of the Year 1 Medical Central Nervous System Unit.
