'Contemporary Issues in Diagnostic Pathology' conference scheduled for Oct. 29

The Wayne State University School of Medicine Department of Pathology's "Contemporary Issues in Diagnostic Pathology" conference is scheduled for Oct. 29.

The scope of this year's conference has been expanded to include head and neck, lung and dermatopathology, said Rouba Ali-Fehmi, M.D., associate professor of WSU Pathology and activity director for the conference. The program has been designed for pathologists, clinicians, residents and fellows.

The conference will run from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Topics and speakers include:

"Recent Developments in the Pathology of Salivary Gland Tumors," Douglas Gnepp, M.D., professor of Pathology at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University and senior surgical pathologist at Rhode Island Hospital

"Unusual Variants of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck: Pathologic Characteristics and Clinical Significance," Dr. Gnepp, M.D.

"Smoking and the Lung, Updates on Interstitial Pneumonias," Thomas Colby, M.D., professor of Laboratory Medicine/Pathology at the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, and Chair of Anatomic Pathology at Mayo Clinic Arizona

"Genes vs. Morphology in the Evaluation of Lung Cancer," Fulvio Lonardo, M.D., associate professor of Pathology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute

"Pitfalls in the Histologic Recognition and Diagnosis of Lung Cancer," Dr. Colby

"Pitfalls in Dermatopathology: When Things are not What They Seem to Be," Aleodor Andea, M.D., associate professor of Pathology & Dermatopathology and program director of the Dermatopathology Fellowship Program, and section head for Dermatopathology at the University of Alabama , Birmingham

"Interesting Cases," Rouba Ali-Fehmi, M.D., associate professor of Pathology, and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Karmanos Cancer Institute; and Wael Sakr, M.D., professor and Chair of Pathology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Karmanos Cancer Institute

The conference will take place at the The Henry, Autograph Collection (formerly the Ritz-Carlton), in Dearborn, Mich.

Registration, which includes continental breakfast and lunch, is $100 for pathologists and clinicians, $40 for residents, fellows and retired clinicians. You may register on line until Oct. 27 at http://www.wsupathology.org/registration.htm.
