Prostate Cancer Symposium set for Sept. 17

The Prostate Net is partnering with the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute to present its first Prostate Cancer Symposium in Detroit.

The Sept. 17 symposium will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Margherio Family Conference Center, located in the Richard J. Mazurek, M.D., Medical Education Commons on the School of Medicine campus. The symposium will have two educational tracks, one for patients, families and advocates, and one for medical professionals.

Founded in 1996, The Prostate Net works to provide and spread information that empowers men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The symposium will provide the latest information on prostate cancer in a two-track educational session that will also include a question/answer session with prostate cancer experts and patients. Patients and their loved ones will have a better understanding of prostate cancer prevention, current treatment options and emerging trends, drug therapies, therapeutic side effects and managing pain, clinical trials and the latest research. They will also gain awareness of prostate cancer disparity within the black community and what can be done to help alleviate it.

Physicians and healthcare professionals will hear about current and emerging best standards of patient-centered care, impact of treatment-related protocols, latest advances in therapeutic protocols and drug developments for all stages of prostate cancer, appropriate use of novel clinical therapies and technological innovations, and effective patient-physician communication techniques.
