Allen Silbergleit, M.D., Clinic Day to focus on managing obesity

St. Joseph Mercy Oakland will host its 53rd annual Allen Silbergleit, M.D., Clinic Day for physicians Oct. 27 in the hospital's Anthony M. Franco Communications Center. This year's theme is "Managing Obesity: The 21st Century Pandemic."

Dr. Silbergleit is a professor of Surgery for the Wayne State University School of Medicine and director of the hospital's surgery residency program. In 2005, St. Joseph Mercy Oakland renamed the annual Clinic Day program in his honor.

The program begins at 7:30 a.m. with registration and continental breakfast and concludes with a luncheon at 12:30 p.m.

Topics and speakers at this year's Clinic Day are:

"Metabolic Syndrome in Adult Obesity Management and Co-Morbidities," Osama Hamdy, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of the Obesity Clinical Program at the Joslin Diabetes Center.

"Surgical Obesity Management and Quality Outcomes," John Birkmeyer, M.D., the George D. Zuidema Professor of Surgery for University of Michigan Health Systems.

"Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Obesity Management," Patrick O'Neil, Ph.D., director of the Weight Management Center and professor of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina.

"Pediatric Obesity Management and Co-Morbidities," Sonia Caprio, M.D., professor of the Department of Pediatrics at the Yale University School of Medicine.
